Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

When We Are Closed

If you have an urgent medical problem "out of hours", please ring the Health Centre on 08444 771 772. When the Health Centre is closed, you will hear a message advising you to choose from 3 options.

If you need medical advice, Option 1 takes you to the NHS Direct help line. Experienced nurses will assess your medical condition and, if the problem is urgent, arrange for Local Care Direct (the local GP out of hours emergency service) to contact you.

A doctor will then give advice or arrange to see you, if necessary, often at their call centre in Huddersfield. Details of any consultation are faxed directly to your doctor the next working morning.

If you need urgent medical attention and do not want to go through the NHS Direct help line, Option 3 will connect you straight to Local Care Direct. This service is only for cases needing immediate attention. If you can wait until the next working day to contact your own doctor, please do so.

Life-threatening emergencies should be dealt with by ringing 999.

Why do we need to close the surgery for training?

We need to ensure that all of our team members are up to speed with the latest developments, regulations and improvements in patient care. This includes our team of doctors, nurses, health care assistants, practice manager, secretaries and receptionists. To make this training really effective, we need to train the team all together at the same time.

In order to achieve this the practice is closed for a training half day which is usually on a Tuesday afternoon every 6-8 weeks. We update the date when the training is scheduled in the surgery reception, on our door, and on the website to avoid any inconvenience to our patients.
